Summary

Nocturnal geckos possess unique cone-based color vision, unlike most night animals that rely on rod vision. This study demonstrates geckos can distinguish colors even in dim moonlight conditions.

Background:

  • Most nocturnal vertebrates have rod-dominant retinas for dim light vision and cone-dominant retinas for bright light color vision.
  • Geckos are an exception, possessing only cone photoreceptors in their retinas, challenging traditional models of nocturnal vision.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether geckos utilize their cone photoreceptors for color vision under scotopic (dim light) conditions.

  • Behavioral experiments were conducted on two helmet geckos (Tarentola chazaliae).
