Summary

Prostate leiomyosarcoma is rare. While complete resection and low mitotic activity may improve outcomes, this study found no definitive prognostic factors for this aggressive cancer.

Background:

  • Prostate leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignancy, comprising less than 0.1% of all prostate tumors.
  • This tumor type is characterized by a generally poor prognosis.

Observation:

  • The study reviewed three cases of prostate leiomyosarcoma over twenty years.
  • Immunohistochemical analysis revealed vimentin positivity in all cases, with desmin or actin also present.
  • Ultrastructural features were also examined.

Findings:

  • Two high-grade (Grade III) sarcomas exhibited aggressive behavior, with patient survival of 5 and 24 months post-diagnosis.
  • A lower-grade (Grade II) case showed a favorable outcome, with the patient remaining disease-free at 60 months.
