A rare primary peritoneal tumor presented as a spigelian hernia in an elderly woman. This case highlights the importance of considering unusual presentations for peritoneal neoplasms.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Spigelian hernias are rare abdominal wall defects.
  • Primary peritoneal tumors are uncommon and can present with diverse clinical manifestations.

Observation:

  • A 74-year-old woman presented with a spigelian hernia.
  • Multidetector computed tomography revealed a large, heterogeneous subcutaneous mass along the right spigelian line, connected to the abdominal cavity.

Findings:

  • The mass was diagnosed as a primary tumor of the peritoneum.
  • This represents the first reported case of a primary peritoneal tumor presenting as a spigelian hernia.

Implications:

  • This case expands the differential diagnosis for spigelian hernias.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Highlights the need for thorough investigation of abdominal masses, even in the context of seemingly benign conditions like hernias.
