  • YKL-40 is a protein secreted by macrophages and neutrophils.
  • Elevated circulating YKL-40 is observed in patients with bacterial infections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate plasma YKL-40 changes after Escherichia coli endotoxin administration in healthy volunteers.
  • To investigate the functional role of YKL-40 in infection models.

Main Methods:

  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure plasma YKL-40.
  • Eight healthy volunteers received injections of E. coli endotoxin or saline.
  • Plasma samples were collected at 0, 2, 4, 8, 24, and 32 hours post-injection.

Main Results:

  • Plasma YKL-40 levels increased significantly after endotoxin injection compared to saline (P < 0.001).
