Area of Science:

  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Spectroscopy

Context:

  • Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) is prone to spectral interference.
  • Accurate elemental analysis requires effective correction of spectral overlap and background signals.

Purpose:

  • To apply and evaluate the factor analysis method for correcting spectral interference in ICP-AES.
  • To compare the efficacy of factor analysis against established methods like partial least squares (PLS) and Kalman filtering.

Summary:

  • Factor analysis was employed to address spectral interference in ICP-AES.
  • The method was tested using two real-world examples, investigating spectral overlap and background interferences.
  • Results demonstrated that factor analysis provides comparable interference correction to PLS and Kalman filtering.
