    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Interventional Endoscopy
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Biliary obstruction is a common clinical problem.
    • Endoscopic stent placement is a standard treatment for biliary obstruction.
    • Plastic stents have a high rate of occlusion.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the use of the Wallstent endoprosthesis for biliary obstruction.
    • To evaluate an alternative to plastic stents in malignant biliary obstruction.

    Main Methods:

    • Endoscopic placement of expandable metallic Wallstent endoprosthesis.
    • Treatment of biliary obstruction secondary to malignant neoplasms.

    Main Results:

    • The Wallstent endoprosthesis offers an alternative treatment option.

  • Conclusions:

    • Expandable metallic stents are a viable option for malignant biliary obstruction.
    • May overcome limitations of traditional plastic stents.
