Summary

Urinary citrate levels in healthy newborns were established, revealing a wide normal range. Ex-preterm infants at term showed similar citrate levels, with no link to nephrocalcinosis or chronic lung disease.

    • Ex-preterm infants at term showed similar urinary citrate levels (mean 1.1 vs. 1.03, p=0.7232) but a significantly higher citrate/creatinine ratio (mean 1.27 vs. 0.27, p=0.0005).
    • No significant differences in urinary citrate, citrate/creatinine, or calcium/citrate ratios were found in infants with NC or CLD. Total parenteral nutrition duration did not correlate with urinary citrate.

    Conclusions:

    • A wide normal range for urinary citrate in healthy term newborns within the first week of life has been established.
    • Ex-preterm infants exhibit similar urinary citrate values at term-corrected age compared to healthy term infants.
    • Urinary citrate levels were not associated with the presence of nephrocalcinosis or chronic lung disease in this cohort of ex-preterm infants.
