Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Large defects in the head and neck, particularly the scalp and forehead, pose significant reconstructive challenges.
  • Tissue expansion offers a method to augment local tissue availability for reconstruction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare conventional long-term tissue expansion with rapid intraoperative expansion.
  • To highlight the utility of tissue expanders in complex head and neck reconstructions.

Main Methods:

  • Discussion of two primary tissue expansion techniques: conventional long-term and rapid intraoperative expansion.
  • Emphasis on the importance of careful selection and application of tissue expanders.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Tissue expansion is effective for reconstructing extensive defects in the head and neck region.
  • Both expansion methods allow for reconstructions previously considered impossible using adjacent tissues.

Conclusions:

  • Tissue expansion is a valuable adjunct in head and neck reconstruction.
  • Proper expander selection and technique minimize rare complications, enabling successful extensive reconstructions.
