Summary

Patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) show higher rates of chromosome aberrations in blood cells compared to healthy individuals. These aberrations may indicate increased mutagen sensitivity and link to disease progression.

Background:

  • Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorders.
  • Chromosomal aberrations are common in MDS, but their presence in peripheral blood lymphocytes is less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency of non-clonal structural and numerical chromosome aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes of MDS patients.
  • To explore the relationship between these aberrations and clinical features of MDS.

  • Analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes from 51 MDS patients and 37 age-matched healthy controls.
  • Assessment of aneuploid cells and structural aberrations using cytogenetic techniques.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated levels of peripheral blood chromosome aberrations in MDS patients suggest increased mutagen sensitivity.
  • A potential association between high peripheral blood aberration levels and rapidly progressive disease warrants further investigation.
  • These findings may have implications for MDS treatment strategies.
