Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Abdominal tuberculosis is a common form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis with diverse clinical presentations.
  • Diagnosis is often difficult due to non-specific and insensitive investigations.
  • Effective diagnostic strategies and treatment evaluation are crucial for patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify suggestive clinical features of abdominal tuberculosis.
  • To assess the efficacy of common diagnostic investigations.
  • To evaluate treatment response to conventional anti-tubercular therapy.

Main Methods:

  • A study of 25 patients with abdominal tuberculosis in the gastroenterology department.
  • Clinical evaluation and investigation using available diagnostic tests.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Treatment with a standard 9-month anti-tubercular regimen and clinical follow-up.
  • Main Results:

    • Eighteen patients were diagnosed through investigations (AFB detection, biopsy, radiology).
    • Seven patients were diagnosed based on clinical features and response to therapy.
    • All patients showed improvement with minimal drug side effects after treatment.

    Conclusions:

    • Tissue biopsy and radiological findings are valuable for diagnosing abdominal tuberculosis.
    • Suggestive clinical features combined with non-specific investigations can guide treatment in endemic areas.
    • Treatment for abdominal tuberculosis aligns with standard anti-TB therapy protocols.
