Summary
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) can cause delirium, a cognitive impairment. This case study shows successful treatment of delirium in an OHSS patient using haloperidol.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Endocrinology
- Neuropsychiatry
Background:
- Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a significant complication of assisted reproductive technologies (ART).
- Delirium is an under-diagnosed clinical disorder characterized by altered consciousness and cognitive impairment.
Observation:
- A 30-year-old woman undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) developed severe OHSS with ascites formation.
- Following paracentesis for ascites management, the patient exhibited altered consciousness and psychomotor hypoactivity.
Findings:
- Psychiatric consultation diagnosed the patient with delirium secondary to OHSS.
- Treatment with haloperidol resulted in the resolution of delirium symptoms within one week.
Implications:
- This case highlights the potential for delirium in severe OHSS patients.
- Early recognition and treatment of delirium in OHSS are crucial for patient recovery.
