  • Studied 14 healthy preterm infants (1000-2200g, 32-46 weeks post-conception).
  • Measured tympanic, skin, and rectal temperatures thrice daily for 7 days.

Main Results:

  • No significant diurnal oscillations in body, tympanic, or skin temperatures were observed.
  • Tympanic, rectal, and skin temperatures increased when ambient temperature exceeded 28°C.
  • Tympanic temperature showed a positive correlation with post-conception age, particularly after 39 weeks.

Conclusions:

  • Preterm infants exhibit a developing capacity for thermoregulation.
  • Ambient temperature significantly influences preterm infant body temperature regulation.
  • Post-conception age is a factor in the maturation of tympanic thermoregulation.
