Summary

Daptomycin resistance developed in a patient with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) during treatment for septic portal vein thrombophlebitis. This highlights the risk of resistance with prolonged daptomycin use in persistent MRSA infections.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Septic thrombophlebitis of the portal vein is a rare but serious condition.
  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a significant cause of healthcare-associated infections.
  • Daptomycin is a lipopeptide antibiotic used for treating resistant gram-positive bacterial infections.

Observation:

  • A patient with presumed septic thrombophlebitis of the portal vein developed daptomycin-resistant MRSA.
  • The patient received prolonged daptomycin therapy for MRSA bacteremia.

Findings:

  • Development of daptomycin resistance in MRSA during prolonged therapy.
  • Persistent focus of infection may contribute to resistance development.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Daptomycin resistance can emerge during prolonged treatment of MRSA infections.
  • Careful monitoring for resistance is crucial in patients with persistent MRSA bacteremia.
  • Alternative treatment strategies may be necessary for daptomycin-resistant MRSA infections.
