Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Renal oncocytosis is a rare kidney condition characterized by multiple oncocytic nodules.
  • This report details an additional case in a 51-year-old woman undergoing long-term hemodialysis.

Observation:

  • The patient's kidney was replaced by numerous brownish nodules, diagnosed histologically as nests of uniform oncocytic cells.
  • Ultrastructural analysis revealed abundant mitochondria within the oncocytic cells.
  • Immunohistochemical findings mirrored sporadic oncocytomas, showing distal nephron similarity and antimitochondrial antigen reactivity.

Findings:

  • The lesion was diagnosed as renal oncocytosis, with ambiguity in classifying larger nodules as distinct oncocytomas.
  • Genetic analysis for Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome gene mutations was negative.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Pathologists and urologists should recognize renal oncocytosis due to its potential as a precursor lesion.
  • Awareness is crucial for early detection and management of associated renal tumors, including renal oncocytoma and chromophobe renal cell carcinoma.
