Background:

  • Hypopituitarism is a known complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  • Anterior pituitary hormone deficiencies post-TBI are typically considered permanent.
  • Recovery of pituitary function after TBI is exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • A 25-year-old male experienced severe TBI.
  • Sixteen months post-TBI, he showed severe growth hormone (GH) and adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) deficiency.
  • He was treated with GH and hydrocortisone replacement therapy.

Findings:

  • Five years after TBI, neuroendocrine assessment revealed normalized GH and ACTH responses.
  • This indicates a reversal of previously diagnosed adult posttraumatic GH deficiency.
  • This is the first reported case of reversible adult posttraumatic GH deficiency.
