Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Medical Case Reports

Background:

  • Acute limb compartment syndrome (ALCS) is a surgical emergency caused by increased pressure in fascial compartments, compromising tissue perfusion.
  • While commonly associated with orthopedic trauma, ALCS can arise spontaneously or from various insults affecting capillary blood flow.
  • Compression sclerotherapy is a treatment for varicose veins, typically considered low-risk.

Observation:

  • This report details an exceptionally rare case of ALCS developing post-procedure in a patient who underwent compression sclerotherapy.
  • The patient presented with symptoms indicative of compartment syndrome, a complication not previously documented following this specific intervention.

Findings:

  • The development of ALCS following compression sclerotherapy represents an unprecedented clinical observation.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This finding suggests that the sclerosing agent or the compression itself may contribute to increased compartmental pressure.
  • Implications:

    • This case underscores the importance of vigilance for rare complications even after seemingly routine procedures.
    • Physicians should consider ALCS in the differential diagnosis of limb pain and swelling after compression sclerotherapy.
    • Further investigation may be warranted to elucidate the mechanism linking compression sclerotherapy to ALCS.
