Summary

Acupuncture effectively relieves chronic low back pain, offering significant short-term relief compared to sham treatments or no additional treatment. However, evidence for acute low back pain is inconclusive, and acupuncture is not proven superior to other active therapies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture in treating low back pain.
  • To synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on acupuncture for low back pain.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review and meta-analysis of 33 RCTs identified through comprehensive database searches (MEDLINE, Cochrane Central, EMBASE, etc.) up to August 2004.
  • Included trials compared needle acupuncture with sham acupuncture, other sham treatments, no additional treatment, or other active therapies.
