Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Pathology
  • Geriatric Medicine

Context:

  • Chronic submandibular sialadenitis in elderly patients often presents atypically.
  • Distinguishing this condition from neoplasms and sialolithiasis is crucial for appropriate management.

Purpose:

  • To characterize the clinical presentation and treatment outcomes of chronic submandibular sialadenitis in patients over 50 years old.
  • To establish diagnostic criteria for senile chronic submandibular sialadenitis.

Summary:

  • Thirty-five elderly patients with chronic submandibular sialadenitis were analyzed.
  • Clinical presentation included submandibular space masses unrelated to eating.
  • Histopathology revealed acinar destruction, inflammatory cell infiltration, and ductal micro-calcification.

Impact:

  • This study aids in diagnosing senile chronic submandibular sialadenitis based on clinical and radiographic findings.
  • It suggests that submandibular gland resection may not be required, potentially avoiding unnecessary surgery.
