Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Andrology
  • Men's Health

Background:

  • The link between lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and male sexual dysfunction is debated.
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) commonly causes LUTS and can impact sexual health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between voiding symptoms and erectile function (EF) in patients with BPH.
  • To utilize validated questionnaires: American Urological Association Symptom Index (AUA-SI) for voiding and International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-15) for sexual function.

Main Methods:

  • 50 men with symptomatic BPH completed the AUA-SI and IIEF-15 questionnaires.
  • AUA-SI scores categorized irritative, obstructive, and total symptoms.
  • IIEF-15 scores assessed erectile function, orgasmic function, sexual desire, intercourse satisfaction, and overall satisfaction.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • No significant correlation was observed between AUA-SI scores (voiding symptoms) and IIEF-15 scores (sexual function).
  • Severity of voiding symptoms did not correlate with the severity of erectile dysfunction.
  • A notable proportion of men reporting no erectile dysfunction still had low erectile function scores on the IIEF-15.

Conclusions:

  • Voiding and erectile function are not correlated in men with BPH when assessed by AUA-SI and IIEF-15.
  • Age was a significant factor, with older patients more likely to experience erectile dysfunction.
