Muscle weakness in older Mexican Americans predicts functional limitations and disability, impacting their quality of life. This study supports the Disablement Process model for this demographic.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Limited research exists on disability development in older Mexican Americans.
- The Disablement Process model provides a framework for understanding disability progression.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the Disablement Process model in older Mexican Americans.
- To examine the relationship between impairment, functional limitations, disability, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL).
Main Methods:
- Structural equation modeling (AMOS 4) was utilized.
- Data from 622 Mexican Americans aged 71+ in the Southwest were analyzed.
Main Results:
- Impairment (muscle strength) significantly predicted functional limitation (beta =.36).
- Functional limitation significantly predicted disability (beta = -.53).
- Disability was significantly associated with physical (beta = -.69) and mental (beta = -.26) HRQOL.
Conclusions:
- Preliminary support for the Disablement Process model was found.
- Muscle strength is a key indicator of impairment.
- SF-36 scores reflect HRQOL and are influenced by disability.
