Low back pain (LBP) prevalence in Turkey is higher than in other developing nations, nearing developed country levels. Factors like age, sex, and smoking are linked to LBP occurrence and activity limitation.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders

Background:

  • Limited data exists on low back pain (LBP) epidemiology in developing countries.
  • Previous studies suggest lower LBP prevalence in developing versus developed nations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of LBP in an urban Turkish population.
  • To identify factors associated with LBP occurrence and activity limitation.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey utilizing face-to-face interviews.
  • Systematic sampling of 100 household clusters in Antalya, including 3,173 participants aged 16+.
  • High response rate of 98.7%.

Main Results:

  • Crude lifetime, 12-month, and point LBP prevalences were 46.6%, 35.9%, and 20.1% respectively.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Independent factors associated with current LBP included older age, female sex, multiparity, housewife status, origin from East Turkey, and smoking.
  • Heavy smoking and age 26-45 were linked to activity restriction due to LBP.
  • Conclusions:

    • The point prevalence of LBP in Turkey is notably higher than in comparable developing countries, aligning with developed country estimates.
    • Smoking appears associated with both the occurrence and severity of LBP.
    • While religious individuals are not more prone to LBP, they report greater activity restriction.
