Summary

Fibromyalgia patients often report memory issues. This study found their memory beliefs align with actual memory performance, suggesting their complaints are accurate.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain and fatigue.
  • Cognitive difficulties, often termed 'fibro-fog', are frequently reported by FM patients.
  • The relationship between subjective memory complaints and objective memory performance in FM is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine memory beliefs in fibromyalgia patients.
  • To determine the association between memory beliefs and actual memory function in FM.
  • To compare memory beliefs between FM patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Metamemory in Adulthood (MIA) questionnaire to assess beliefs about memory.
  • Included 23 FM patients, 23 age- and education-matched controls, and 22 older controls.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Correlated self-reported memory capacity scores with objective memory performance on a recall task.
  • Main Results:

    • Fibromyalgia patients reported significantly lower memory capacity and greater memory deterioration compared to both control groups.
    • Patients exhibited lower self-efficacy regarding memory, higher motivation, increased strategy use, and heightened memory anxiety than age-matched controls.
    • Perceived memory capacity, achievement motivation, and self-efficacy were significantly correlated with objective recall performance in FM patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Fibromyalgia patients' subjective memory complaints have a basis in objective memory function.
    • Memory beliefs, including perceived capacity and self-efficacy, are linked to actual memory performance in FM.
    • Findings support the validity of memory concerns in fibromyalgia and highlight potential targets for intervention.
