Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Head and Neck Surgery

Background:

  • Turbinate osteomas are rare benign bone tumors originating from the nasal turbinates.
  • While middle turbinate osteomas have been documented, superior turbinate osteomas are exceptionally rare, with no prior case reports.

Observation:

  • A 61-year-old female presented with a chief complaint of headaches.
  • Imaging and clinical examination revealed a superior turbinate osteoma as the likely cause.

Findings:

  • This case represents the first reported instance of a superior turbinate osteoma.
  • The patient underwent successful resection of the osteoma using endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS).

Implications:

  • This report expands the known anatomical locations for turbinate osteomas.
  • Endoscopic sinus surgery is a viable and effective treatment for superior turbinate osteomas.
  • Highlights the importance of considering rare pathologies in the differential diagnosis of headaches.
