Erectile dysfunction (ED) is common in human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) carriers, especially those with HTLV-I-Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis (HAM/TSP). ED significantly correlates with urinary symptoms and neurological impairment in these individuals.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Urology

Background:

  • Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) infection is linked to HTLV-I-Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis (HAM/TSP).
  • Sexual dysfunction, particularly erectile dysfunction (ED), is a potential complication of chronic infections and neurological disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of ED in HTLV-I-infected individuals in Bahia, Brazil.
  • To investigate the correlation between sexual dysfunction, urinary symptoms, and neurological impairment in HTLV-I carriers.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 218 HTLV-I carriers (111 males, 107 females) from Bahia, Brazil.
  • Standardized questionnaires (Urinary Distress Inventory, Brief Male Sexual Function Inventory) assessed urinary complaints and ED.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Neurological impairment was evaluated using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), with HAM/TSP defined as EDSS ≥ 2.
  • Main Results:

    • Overall ED prevalence was 40.5% among HTLV-I carriers.
    • In the HAM/TSP group (EDSS ≥ 2), ED frequency was significantly higher at 88.2%.
    • Statistically significant associations were found between ED, sexual dissatisfaction, urinary symptoms (frequency, nocturia, urgency), and neurological impairment (EDSS ≥ 2).

    Conclusions:

    • HTLV-I-infected individuals exhibit a high frequency of erectile dysfunction.
    • ED in this population is closely associated with urinary symptoms and the degree of neurological impairment.
    • HTLV-I carriers, particularly those with HAM/TSP, experience significant compromise in sexual activity.
