Summary

Capecitabine plus docetaxel demonstrated improved survival for metastatic breast cancer patients. This combination therapy proved cost-effective, offering a favorable incremental cost-effectiveness ratio compared to docetaxel alone.

Background:

Metastatic breast carcinoma patients pretreated with anthracyclines often receive docetaxel.
Capecitabine in combination with docetaxel showed improved overall survival compared to docetaxel monotherapy.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of capecitabine plus docetaxel versus docetaxel monotherapy.
To compare the gain in quality-adjusted survival and associated healthcare costs.

Main Methods:

A randomized trial comparing capecitabine/docetaxel combination therapy with docetaxel monotherapy.
Prospective collection of survival time and medical resource utilization data.
Calculation of the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained.
