Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Medical Case Study

Background:

  • Bilateral external carotid artery aneurysms are rare vascular conditions.
  • Physical examination revealed palpable pulsatile neck masses in a 60-year-old female.
  • The patient reported no symptoms of pain, cranial nerve compression, or cerebral ischemia.

Observation:

  • Duplex ultrasonography identified bilateral 1.5 x 2.2 cm external carotid artery aneurysms.
  • Computed tomography and angiography confirmed the isolated nature of the bilateral external carotid artery aneurysms.

Findings:

  • The patient was managed conservatively with no surgical intervention.
  • At a 4-year follow-up, the patient remained asymptomatic.
  • The bilateral external carotid artery aneurysms showed no change in size over the follow-up period.

Implications:

  • Conservative management may be a viable option for asymptomatic, isolated bilateral external carotid artery aneurysms.
  • This case highlights the importance of thorough vascular imaging for unexplained neck masses.
  • Long-term monitoring is crucial for patients with unoperated carotid artery aneurysms.
