Background:

  • Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
  • Upper respiratory infections (URIs) are common conditions.
  • The relationship between URIs and established TMJ disease requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if upper respiratory infections (URIs) aggravate existing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disease.
  • To investigate the association between specific URIs and clinical symptoms of TMD.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 283 patients with diagnosed TMD was analyzed.
  • Patients completed questionnaires and underwent clinical examinations.
  • Statistical analysis, including chi-square tests and logistic regression, was used to assess associations between TMD symptoms and infectious conditions (sinusitis/rhinitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis).

  • Pharyngitis/sinusitis in TMD patients can serve as a warning sign for impending TMJ symptom exacerbation.
