Area of Science:

  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Elderly individuals often face complex health and social challenges.
  • Early identification and intervention are crucial for improving health outcomes in older adults.
  • Emergency medical services (EMS) interact with a significant number of elderly individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the capability of paramedics in identifying elderly individuals at risk.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of referring at-risk elderly individuals for professional assessment and services.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, nonrandomized open trial was conducted in Akron, Ohio.
  • 130 firefighter paramedics screened approximately 6,000 elderly patients (age 60+) for various issues.
  • Screening included medical, mental health, social, and environmental factors, with referrals to the Area Agency on Aging.

Main Results:

  • Paramedics identified 197 individuals with potential problems, leading to 124 assessments.
  • Geriatric assessors confirmed problems in 121 of the 124 assessed cases (98% positive predictive value).
  • The program proved beneficial for 94 individuals (48% of those identified and assessed).

Conclusions:

  • Paramedics can successfully function as case finders for vulnerable elderly populations.
  • Effective referral pathways can be established between EMS and community service agencies.
  • This model demonstrates a viable approach to linking at-risk seniors with necessary support systems.
