Summary

Aggressive rhabdoid meningiomas can recur rapidly after surgery. This rare grade III subtype requires prompt, appropriate treatment due to its aggressive nature.

Background:

Meningiomas are typically slow-growing tumors with low recurrence rates after subtotal resection.
Subtotal resection is a common surgical approach for meningioma removal.

Observation:

A 47-year-old woman experienced a large extracranial meningioma recurrence one year after subtotal resection.
Histological examination revealed an absence of typical meningioma characteristics in the recurrent tumor.

Findings:

Immunohistological and ultrastructural studies classified the recurrence as a grade III meningioma, rhabdoid subtype.
This newly recognized rhabdoid subtype exhibits aggressive behavior.

Implications:

Aggressive meningioma subtypes necessitate tailored treatment strategies.
