Area of Science:

  • Chemical Physics
  • Spectroscopy
  • Inorganic Chemistry

Background:

  • Gaseous metal hydrides are important in chemical reactions.
  • Previous studies have limited data on the properties of HgH2, CdH2, and ZnH2.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize and characterize gaseous mercury dihydride (HgH2), cadmium dihydride (CdH2), and zinc dihydride (ZnH2).
  • To determine the metal-hydrogen bond lengths in these molecules.

Main Methods:

  • Direct gas-phase reaction of excited metal atoms (Hg, Cd, Zn) with molecular hydrogen (H2).
  • High-resolution infrared emission spectroscopy for molecular identification.
  • Rotational analysis of antisymmetric stretching fundamental bands for structural determination.

Main Results:

  • Successful synthesis of gaseous HgH2, CdH2, and ZnH2 molecules.
  • Identification of the synthesized molecules through their unique infrared emission spectra.
  • Determination of metal-hydrogen bond lengths from spectral analysis.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides the first spectroscopic characterization of gaseous HgH2, CdH2, and ZnH2.
  • The determined bond lengths offer insights into the electronic structure and bonding in these metal hydrides.
  • This research advances the understanding of simple metal hydride chemistry.
