This study describes a rare case of focal dystonia in a golfer

Background:

  • Focal dystonia is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions.

Observation:

  • A 45-year-old male golf instructor developed left arm focal dystonia at age 37.
  • Symptoms included involuntary arm movement and simultaneous triceps/biceps contraction, persisting after cessation of golf.
  • Standard neuroimaging (MRI, PET, SPECT) showed no abnormalities, but motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were absent bilaterally.

Findings:

  • Functional MRI (fMRI) revealed decreased activation in the right primary motor, supplementary motor, and premotor areas during a left arm raising task.
