Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Gerontology
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) frequently co-occurs with schizophrenia in adults.
  • The prevalence of OCD in elderly schizophrenia patients remains under-researched.
  • Both schizophrenia and OCD symptoms can persist into older age.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of OCD in elderly patients hospitalized for schizophrenia exacerbation.
  • To investigate the clinical characteristics of elderly schizophrenia patients with and without OCD.
  • To explore the onset patterns (early vs. late) of OCD in this patient group.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 50 elderly patients with acute exacerbation of DSM-IV schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder was assessed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Participants were evaluated for the presence of OCD using DSM-IV criteria.
  • Symptom severity for both schizophrenia and OCD was measured using established clinical rating scales.
  • Main Results:

    • Eight out of 50 participants (16%) met the criteria for OCD.
    • No significant differences in demographic or clinical variables were found between schizophrenia patients with and without OCD.
    • Half of the schizophrenia-OCD group exhibited late-onset OCD, while the other half had persistent early-onset OCD.

    Conclusions:

    • Obsessive-compulsive disorder is not uncommon in elderly schizophrenia patients.
    • The findings suggest distinct etiological pathways for early-onset versus late-onset OCD in schizophrenia.
    • Identifying and treating comorbid OCD in elderly schizophrenia patients is crucial for comprehensive care.
