Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Gerontology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Tinnitus, the perception of sound without external stimuli, is a common issue, especially in older adults.
  • It frequently coexists with sensorineural hearing loss in the elderly population.
  • Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) involves noise, attention diversion, and psychological support.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of TRT for chronic tinnitus in elderly patients with sensorineural hearing loss.

Main Methods:

  • 30 elderly participants (65-90 years) with chronic tinnitus and hearing loss completed standardized tinnitus questionnaires.
  • All subjects were fitted with digital hearing aids.
  • Subjective hearing outcomes were assessed after one month of follow-up.

Main Results:

  • A significant improvement in tinnitus tolerance was reported by 24 out of 30 patients.
  • Hearing aid fitting proved effective for the majority of elderly patients.
  • Pre-fitting speech discrimination scores (above/below 80%) influenced treatment effectiveness.

Conclusions:

  • Hearing aid fitting is a successful treatment for most elderly individuals with chronic tinnitus.
  • Pre-existing speech understanding is a key factor in the success of hearing aids for tinnitus management in this demographic.
