Background:

  • Limited data exists on immunological changes from sublingual immunotherapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess T cell proliferation in patients successfully treated with sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) for house dust mite (HDM) allergy.

Main Methods:

  • Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were collected from HDM-allergic patients after 3+ years of SLIT, untreated allergic controls, and healthy controls.
  • PBMCs were stimulated in vitro with various allergens (PHA, Candida albicans, Dermatophagoides farinae, grasses, Parietaria judaica, cat) for 3 and 6 days.
  • T cell proliferation was measured post-stimulation.

  • SLIT-treated subjects exhibited significantly reduced T cell proliferation against Candida albicans, Parietaria, and grasses compared to untreated allergic individuals.
  • Statistical significance was observed with p-values of 0.0002, 0.0033, and 0.009, respectively.

  • This pilot study provides evidence for decreased T cell proliferation in allergic individuals undergoing SLIT.
