Nurse codependency: instrument development and validation.

Summary

The Nurse Codependency Questionnaire (NCQ) was developed to identify codependency in nurses. The validated 24-item NCQ shows good reliability and may aid in early intervention and professional health.

Background:

Codependency is a recognized issue within healthcare professions.
A validated instrument is needed to assess codependency among nurses.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and evaluate the Nurse Codependency Questionnaire (NCQ).
To assess the reliability and validity of the NCQ for use in the nursing profession.

Main Methods:

A 95-item pool was generated from codependency literature.
Expert judges assessed content validity (CVI > .80).
Principal factor analysis and correlation analysis were used with a sample of 547 nurses.

Main Results:

The final 24-item NCQ supported two domains: "codependent caretaking" and "lack of voice".
High test-retest reliability (.90) and internal consistency (.80) were found for the overall scale.
The NCQ demonstrated known groups validity by discriminating between binge and non-binge eaters.

Conclusions:

The NCQ is a reliable and valid tool for identifying codependency in nurses.
Screening for nurse codependency can support professional health through early intervention.
Further research is needed on external factors influencing nurse codependency expression.
