Background:

  • Tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and tissue factor activity are key inflammatory mediators.
  • Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a potent stimulator of immune responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of varying physical exercise intensities on TNF and tissue factor activity in healthy subjects.
  • To compare immune responses in athletes with different training frequencies.

Main Methods:

  • Blood samples from 25 healthy subjects (categorized by training frequency) were stimulated with LPS before and after exercise.
  • TNF production was measured in LPS-stimulated blood.
  • Tissue factor activity was also assessed.

Main Results:

  • Top athletes showed significantly lower resting TNF production compared to less trained individuals.
