Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Autonomic Neuroscience

Background:

  • Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD).
  • Previous studies have indicated various autonomic symptoms in PD patients, but comprehensive surveys comparing them to healthy controls are limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To comprehensively survey and compare the prevalence of autonomic dysfunction symptoms in men with Parkinson's disease versus elderly healthy controls.
  • To highlight the impact of autonomic symptoms on the quality of life in PD patients.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire assessing autonomic function was administered to 48 men with Parkinson's disease (mean age 65.8 years) and 32 healthy elderly male controls (mean age 70.4 years).
  • Prevalence rates of specific autonomic symptoms were compared between the PD group and the control group.

Main Results:

  • Parkinson's disease patients exhibited significantly higher rates of erectile dysfunction (60.4% vs. 37.5%), incomplete bladder emptying (41.6% vs. 15.6%), urinary urgency (45.8% vs. 3.1%), constipation (43.9% vs. 6.25%), dysphagia (22.9% vs. 6.25%), and orthostatic dizziness (21.95% vs. 0%).
  • Eighty-nine percent of PD patients reported at least one autonomic symptom, compared to 43% of controls (p < 0.05).
  • Erectile dysfunction was identified as a particularly significant issue affecting PD patients' quality of life.

Conclusions:

  • Autonomic nervous system dysfunction is a pervasive and significant problem in men with Parkinson's disease.
  • The high prevalence of symptoms like erectile dysfunction underscores the need for clinical attention to autonomic dysfunction in PD management.
  • Addressing autonomic symptoms is crucial for improving the overall quality of life for individuals with Parkinson's disease.
