Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Headache Medicine

Background:

  • Chronic daily headache (CDH) affects individuals 15+ days per month.
  • Classification of CDH, particularly chronic migraine, is evolving for clinical relevance.
  • Medication overuse headache (MOH) significantly impacts CDH disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review diagnostic criteria for MOH.
  • To examine the subset of headaches within CDH.
  • To discuss epidemiologic and therapeutic aspects of CDH and MOH.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of diagnostic criteria for MOH.
  • Analysis of CDH classifications.
  • Synthesis of epidemiological data and treatment strategies.

Main Results:

  • Accurate diagnosis of CDH (chronic migraine, chronic tension-type headache) is precluded by MOH.
  • MOH criteria are essential for differentiating primary CDH.
  • Epidemiological trends and therapeutic options for MOH and CDH are presented.

Conclusions:

  • Excluding MOH is critical for diagnosing chronic daily headaches.
  • Understanding MOH is key to managing chronic migraine and other CDH.
  • Further research into epidemiology and therapeutics is warranted.
