Summary

Triphasic oral contraceptives may trigger panic disorder in susceptible women. Discontinuing these birth control pills led to complete symptom resolution in two reported cases.

  • Two cases are presented where triphasic oral contraceptives appeared to precipitate panic disorder.
  • Women using these hormonal contraceptives developed panic symptoms.

Findings:

  • Complete and rapid resolution of panic disorder symptoms occurred after stopping triphasic oral contraceptives.
  • Cessation of medication was directly correlated with symptom improvement.

Implications:

  • Triphasic oral contraceptives might be a precipitating factor for panic disorder in predisposed individuals.
