Summary

Benzodiazepines, like lormetazepam and lorazepam, can cause hiccups in healthy individuals. These drug-induced hiccups are typically transient and resolve on their own.

Background:

  • Hiccup is a common reflex, but drug-induced cases are less understood.
  • Benzodiazepines are frequently implicated in literature for causing hiccups.

Observation:

  • Three cases of hiccup following benzodiazepine administration (lormetazepam and lorazepam) in healthy subjects during clinical trials are presented.
  • Two subjects experienced hiccups after lormetazepam, with one showing a positive rechallenge.
  • One subject developed hiccups after lorazepam administration.

Findings:

  • Benzodiazepines, specifically lormetazepam and lorazepam, were associated with hiccup episodes in healthy young adults.
  • The observed hiccups were transient, resolving within 45-50 minutes in the reported cases.
