Summary

Elevated 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) expression in human carotid plaques correlates with instability and rupture. This suggests 5-LO, via leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), contributes to atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability.
