Area of Science:

  • Parasitology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Abdominal Imaging

Context:

  • Splenic hydatidosis is a rare clinical manifestation of Echinococcus infection.
  • Diagnosis and management of splenic hydatid cysts present unique challenges.
  • This study reviews surgical outcomes for splenic hydatidosis over a 29-year period.

Purpose:

  • To report on the surgical management and outcomes of patients with splenic hydatidosis.
  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of splenectomy for splenic hydatidosis.
  • To highlight the role of modern imaging in diagnosing splenic hydatid disease.

Summary:

  • Five patients with splenic hydatidosis underwent splenectomy between 1974 and 2003.
  • Preoperative diagnosis was confirmed by serological tests and CT scans.
  • Splenectomy resulted in a 20% morbidity rate (subphrenic abscess) but no mortality, with a mean follow-up of 187 months showing no recurrences.

Impact:

  • Enhanced diagnostic accuracy for splenic hydatidosis due to advanced imaging techniques.
  • Splenectomy is confirmed as a safe and effective surgical approach for splenic hydatidosis.
  • Long-term follow-up demonstrates the durability of surgical treatment with no recurrence.
