Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between parental alcohol consumption and the risk of serious injuries in children.
  • To identify specific patterns of parental drinking that may increase child injury risk.

Main Methods:

  • A nationally representative sample of 12,360 children and parents was surveyed.
  • Data were collected through household interviews for the 1988 National Health Interview Survey (Alcohol and Child Health supplements).
  • Serious injuries were defined as those requiring hospitalization, surgery, or significant missed school/bed rest.

Main Results:

  • Children of mothers classified as problem drinkers had a 2.1-fold increased risk of serious injury compared to children of nondrinkers.
  • Maternal problem drinking combined with paternal moderate or heavy drinking further increased the relative risk of serious injury to 2.7.
  • No significant associations were found between fathers' drinking patterns and child injuries, nor other measures of mothers' alcohol consumption.

Conclusions:

  • Parental problem drinking, particularly by mothers, is associated with an elevated risk of serious injury in children.
  • Children with two problem-drinking parents face a higher risk.
  • Further research into mechanisms and interventions is crucial, with a call for physicians to screen for parental drinking and facilitate treatment.
