Background:

  • Calcinosis, a form of dystrophic soft-tissue calcification, occurs in damaged tissues with normal calcium/phosphorus metabolism.
  • It is frequently observed in connective tissue diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, and dermatomyositis.
  • Calcinosis can lead to muscle atrophy, joint contractures, skin ulceration, inflammation, and infection.

Observation:

  • A review of literature from 1972 to 2004 identified calcinosis as a significant source of pain and disability in patients with connective tissue diseases.
  • Various treatments including warfarin, colchicine, probenecid, bisphosphonates, diltiazem, minocycline, aluminum hydroxide, salicylate, surgical extirpation, and CO2 laser therapy have been attempted.
  • No treatment has demonstrated convincing efficacy in preventing or reducing calcinosis.
