Purpose of the Study:

  • To map the topographic distribution and quantity of vessels perforating into the subglottic region from the CS.
  • To determine the caliber of these vessels in the Turkish population.

Main Methods:

  • Microdissection of 50 autopsy specimens (5 female, 45 male) without laryngeal pathology.
  • Analysis of superficial vascular structures, foramens, and vessel diameters in the cricothyroid membrane.
  • Localization relative to the midline (right/left, cranial/caudal) was recorded.

Main Results:

  • A total of 180 perforating vessels were identified across 50 specimens.
  • Vessel distribution: 78 midline, 53 right, 49 left.
  • 20 specimens showed 2-4 vessels per foramen entering the subglottic area.

Conclusions:

  • The cricothyroid area's vascular connections are vital for surgical procedures, laryngeal cancer metastasis, and trauma management.
  • Emphasis on the vascular anatomy and dimensions of the cricothyroid space is clinically significant for the Turkish population.
