Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Linezolid is a crucial antibiotic for treating resistant bacterial infections like osteomyelitis.
  • Optic neuropathy is a rare but serious potential adverse effect of certain medications.

Observation:

  • A 27-year-old woman developed optic and peripheral neuropathy during prolonged linezolid therapy for osteomyelitis.
  • Corticosteroid administration worsened the patient's visual loss.
  • Discontinuation of linezolid resulted in substantial recovery of optic neuropathy.

Findings:

  • The case suggests a diagnosis of linezolid-induced optic neuropathy.
  • Prolonged use and a higher-than-usual dose of linezolid were noted.
  • The patient's recovery post-linezolid cessation supports the diagnosis.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Ophthalmologists must consider linezolid-induced optic neuropathy in patients on prolonged therapy.
  • Corticosteroids are not recommended for treating this specific type of optic neuropathy.
  • Awareness of this adverse effect is crucial for safe and effective linezolid use.
