Summary

Perfluorocarbon liquids, used in eye surgery, do not support microbial growth. This finding indicates they do not increase the risk of endophthalmitis, a serious eye infection.

  • Tested perfluorodecaline, perfluoro-noctane, and perfluorophenanthrene.
  • Inoculated with Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans.
  • Utilized tryptone soy broth, pancreatic digest of casein, and Sabouraud broth.
