Children of parents with panic disorder (PD) show heightened fear responses and attention biases to threat cues. This suggests a familial link in threat processing, particularly in social phobia.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Panic disorder (PD) is associated with altered threat processing.
  • Understanding familial risk factors for anxiety disorders is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if offspring of parents with PD exhibit increased sensitivity and attention to fear stimuli.
  • To examine threat processing in offspring with and without anxiety disorders.

Main Methods:

  • Participants: Offspring (ages 9-19) of adults with PD, major depressive disorder (MDD), or no disorder.
  • Task: Viewing computer-presented faces (angry, fearful, happy) and rating fear, hostility, and nose width.
  • Measures: Subjective fear ratings and reaction times (latency) for attention allocation.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Offspring of PD parents reported more fear and had slower reaction times to fear ratings compared to controls.
  • Offspring with anxiety disorders reported more fear, but this was not significant when parental PD was controlled.
  • Social phobia in offspring was linked to slower reaction times for fear ratings, independent of parental PD.

Conclusions:

  • Parental PD is associated with altered offspring responses to fear provocation.
  • Social phobia in children may specifically involve attention allocation to subjective anxiety during threat perception.
