Summary

Hyperthyroidism can worsen Parkinson's disease tremor, mimicking treatment resistance. Treating the thyroid condition effectively reduced the exaggerated parkinsonian tremor in a patient.

Background:

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder primarily affecting motor function.
  • Tremor is a common symptom of PD, often managed with dopaminergic medications.

Observation:

  • A 70-year-old male patient presented with parkinsonian tremor significantly exacerbated by concurrent hyperthyroidism.
  • The parkinsonian symptoms masked the clinical diagnosis of hyperthyroidism.

Findings:

  • Anti-thyroid treatment led to a notable improvement in the patient's exaggerated parkinsonian tremor.
  • This suggests a direct link between thyroid dysfunction and tremor severity in PD.

Implications:

  • Thyroid dysfunction should be considered in the differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease patients with refractory or worsening tremor.
