Background:

  • Sports-related injuries frequently cause testicular trauma.
  • Chronic urogenital trauma in horse riding has not been previously studied for scrotal abnormalities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between horse riding and scrotal sonographic abnormalities.
  • To determine if chronic urogenital trauma from horse riding increases the prevalence of these abnormalities.

Main Methods:

  • Compared scrotal sonographic findings in 26 male horse riders (Group 1) with 26 healthy non-riders (Group 2).
  • Mean age in Group 1 was 31 years with 5 years of riding experience; Group 2 also had a mean age of 31 years.
  • All participants underwent clinical evaluation and scrotal sonographic examination.

  • Overall scrotal abnormalities were significantly higher in riders (77%) versus non-riders (38%).
  • Common findings in riders included varicocele (46%), epididymal cyst (35%), and testicular calcification (19%).

  • Horse riding is associated with an increased prevalence of scrotal sonographic abnormalities.
  • Recommend scrotal sonographic screening for equestrians presenting with palpable masses or related symptoms.
